History

Meiklejohn Elementary is a highly valued commodity in the Five Parks neighborhood of Arvada. The school is a beautiful building which opened in the fall of 2006 and is full of wonderful resources, one of the greatest amounts of technology in the district, and one of the best and most knowledgeable staffs in the state. Our parents and families take great pride in the work we do as a collective school community. Additionally, we have a highly involved parent and grandparent community as well as an incredibly active PTA which is uniquely important to our school-wide success.

Our school is named for Al Meiklejohn, Republican State Senator from Colorado. Alvin Meiklejohn Jr. was born in Omaha on June 18, 1923 but moved to Denver with his parents when he was an infant. Meiklejohn graduated from South High School and served in World War II as a bomber pilot. He earned his law degree from the University of Denver and was also a certified public accountant.

Meiklejohn was on the Jefferson County Board of Education for six years. He twice won the distinguished service award from the Denver Regional Council of Governments.

"He always believed education was the key to a successful life," said his son, Scott Meiklejohn.
