Slide 1: Meiklejohn Volunteer Orientation, 2026-2027.
Slide 2 (Mission Statement): We at Meiklejohn are a community of learners committed to engaging in opportunities for growth as critical and creative thinkers.
Slide 3: In our Meiklejohn community we ROAR by being Safe, Respectful, & Responsible. You will see staff reinforcing this behavior with students throughout the day.
Slide 4: Quote by Tom Herner (1998): "If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to drive, we teach. If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we… teach? punish? Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others?" We teach students how to behave through clear expectations and positive reinforcement, alongside appropriate consequences.
Slide 5 (Safety): Safety is our number one concern and we take it very seriously. Our staff is trained annually to ensure student safety. In the case of an emergency, the front office will send important information via messenger; please make sure information is accurate on Jeffco Connect. If an emergency arises while you are volunteering, head to the nearest classroom teacher or staff member to get guidance. Emergency protocols include Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter.
Slide 6 (Reminders for working with students):
- Restrooms: Students are able to use restrooms as needed.
- Missing Students: Call the office if a student is missing.
- Student Incentives: Please do not bring food as a student incentive. Grab ROAR tickets at the office if you would like to give out incentives.
- Injured or Ill Students: Call the office or send the student to the clinic with two student escorts.
- Behavioral Concerns: Contact the student’s classroom teacher with any significant behavioral concerns.
Slide 7 (Confidentiality): As a volunteer at Meiklejohn, you may have limited access to student education records (files, documents, papers, grades) containing personally identifiable information. Volunteers must not disclose this information to anyone other than school administration or staff. Please complete the Volunteer Agreement form.
