Health Services
The Meiklejohn staff is concerned about the health and well being of all our students. Our clinic is available for those children who become ill or are injured at school. If a child runs a temperature of 100 degrees or greater, has vomited, or has an injury that appears to require medical attention, parents will be notified to come pick up their child. Please continue to update your contact information as needed.
Contagious Diseases
Please report to the school office any contagious disease your child may have (chicken pox, impetigo, measles, pink eye, strep throat, Fifth’s disease, etc.). If your child complains of a fever, sore throat, nausea, etc., in the morning, please heed the warning and check further before sending him/her to school.
Medications
The Medication Policy for Jeffco states that prescription, nonprescription, or herbal medication will be given only if the medication cannot be given appropriately outside of school hours. If medications are to be administered at school, the following apply:
-
All medication must be brought to the school clinic in the original labeled container.
-
Prescription medication labels must state the student’s name, name of the medication, how often it is to be given, the dosage, when the medication is to be stopped, and the name of the prescribing physician.
-
A medication form (#924), available in the school clinic, must be filled out by the parent for all prescription, nonprescription, and herbal medications.
-
The physician must sign the form for all prescriptions ordered for fourteen days or longer. Medication needs to be picked up at the end of the school year. If not, it will be destroyed.
When to Keep Your Child Home from School
If your child is not feeling well, your physician is the best person to consult about whether or not he/she can go to school. Common sense, concern for your child’s well-being, and the possibility of infecting classmates should all contribute to the decision about whether your child should stay home. As a general guideline, keep him or her home if he/she:
-
Has a fever of 100 degrees or more.
-
Has vomited twice in the last 24 hours.
-
May be contagious to other children.
Medical Forms
Jeffco families must submit a medical provider-signed agreement if their student requires medication during the school day.
Mental Health Supports
Meiklejohn promotes a safe, positive learning environment by supporting mental health.
Jeffco Public Schools recognizes the growing concern with injuries resulting in concussion or concussion-like symptoms. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or concussion, in children is a rapidly growing public health concern.
Jeffco Public Schools partners with Hazel Health, Inc. to provide free, additional physical and mental health care services for students. This a telehealth extension of support to Jeffco students enrolled at district-managed schools.
Jeffco Public Schools' Certified Application Assistance Site (CAAS) operates through the Jeffco Public Schools Community and Family Connections (CFC) program. CFC assists any individuals inquiring about Health First Colorado (Medicaid), Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) and other health-related resources.
Hearing and vision screenings are conducted for students in their schools according to the Colorado Department of Education guidelines.
The Department of Health Services at Jeffco Public Schools recognizes that any student or family can have lice. Jeffco’s district nurses follow several protocols and are an excellent resource for school administration, teachers, parents and families.
Parents and guardians of Jeffco Public Schools students can purchase student accident, athletic and dental insurance coverage.
Health Services in Jeffco
Jeffco Public Schools' Department of Health Services provides health consultation and resources to support students and their families.
Each school has a district Registered Nurse (RN) who consults with students, families, school staff and administration. Ask your student’s school for their district RN contact details and notify the RN if your student has a health need that requires support during the school day.
Each school also has a school health aide who does day-to-day care of students such as medication, Band-Aids, and ice.
Keep your student’s health concerns updated at registration and as conditions change during the school year. It is important for Jeffco to have current contact information of families.
When Students and Staff Should Stay Home
Jeffco follows the recommendations from Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) on when students and staff should stay home from school, work or childcare. District RNs provide guidance to school administration following the How Sick is Too Sick document.
The best ways to stop the spread of infection is through good hand washing and staying home when sick.
Immunizations
Colorado law requires all students attending Colorado schools and licensed childcare centers to be vaccinated against certain diseases unless a medical or non-medical exemption is filed.
For information about vaccine requirements, resources and exemptions, visit the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s School-Required Vaccines page.
